Simulation activities

The Simulation Learning Environment (SLE) Centres at Traralgon and Bairnsdale have seen an increase in the number of students and staff participating in simulation sessions in the first half of the year both onsite and at outreach locations. Some of the simulation activities that are being run include basic and advanced life support, obstetric emergency workshops, pain management study days and delirium workshops. External groups such as Paramedics and the Mental Health Alcohol and Drug Nurse Practitioner Collaborative have also been taking advantage of the equipment and facilities by holding training sessions and workshops within the SLE centres.

The number of simulation facilitators across the region has also increased due to National Health Education and Training in Simulation (NHET-Sim) workshops being held at a number of local organisations.

Gippsland Health Simulation Network (GHSN)

The Gippsland Health Simulation Network (GHSN) has been established to develop, implement and evaluate a regional strategy in simulation to ensure co-ordination and promote continuity of learning for medicine, nursing, allied health professionals and social care practitioners studying and working in the region.

The GHSN committee has now been elected from the greater member group across Gippsland, with Debra Nestel accepting the position of Chair. There have been three sub-committees formed to move activities forward:

  • Education & Resource Development
  • Communication Strategy/Membership
  • Policy/Resource Maintenance & Sharing

The GHSN was highlighted in a recent article by Nestel et al., (2013): Strategic approaches to simulation-based education: A case study from Australia.  J Health Spec; 1:4-12.
