MEDIA RELEASE

Local Freemasons groups have partnered with Bass Coast Health to help transform the health service’s Armitage House in Wonthaggi into a contemporary rehabilitation and palliative care centre.

Wonthaggi’s Powlett Lodge Freemasons group have joined forces with their regional Freemasons neighbours and other community-minded groups to commit to a long-term fundraising strategy to restore Armitage and modernise its facilities.

The groups are planning a series of fundraising events over the next two years - kicking off with a formal gala dinner event at the Wonthaggi Workmen’s Club on Wednesday 12th June 2019. This is expected to be a sell-out event.

During the appeal, various Freemasons and community groups will hold a range of fundraising activities, in collaboration with Bass Coast Health.

Powlett Lodge member Ken Barnes says, “Our target is to raise $150,000 and we will apply to Freemasons Victoria for them to match donations once we raise a significant amount. We want to see Armitage House transformed into a modern and calming space where patients and their loved ones receive palliative care”.

Palliative care provides specialised medical and nursing care for people with life-limiting illnesses. It focuses on providing relief from symptoms, pain, and physical and mental stress at any stage of the illness.

Bass Coast Health CEO Jan Child said, “Our ‘We Care about Bass Coast’ campaign is an important initiative to keep improving our health service.  We are very grateful to the Freemasons for partnering with us to improve the Armitage House facilities in particular, and know this will benefit our local community greatly. We have received enormous State and Federal support for our infrastructure works at the Hospital – Armitage is our next priority, and this fundraising will ensure we can give patients at the end of life, and their families the best environment possible. We are thrilled to be working alongside the local Freemasons and I hope that we can encourage the community to give locally, to ensure we can provide the best care locally”.
