KernART Prize raising money for kids

Friday 20 October 2017

If your idea of a good time this Melbourne Cup weekend is browsing through local artworks while sipping wine and enjoying nibbles, all in a setting of rolling hills and spectacular hinterland scenery, then you’re in for a treat!

The local group of dedicated artists - KernART (based, of course, in Kernot) are again hosting their annual KernART Prize competition. The competition aims to bring together a community of art-loving and ‘art-starting’ people from across the Bass Coast shire and surrounding areas.

The competition is open to all people of all ages and artistic abilities, using all mediums, and every entry will be enthusiastically received. Entries can be submitted online at

KernART’s Adam McLeod says, “With prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000, it’s definitely worth getting your creative juices flowing for!”

This year KernART have generously chosen Bass Coast Health (BCH) as the beneficiary of the money raised, which will be used to help the children of people suffering from mental illness. This will help ensure that these children don’t miss out on all the opportunities that life can give them.

BCH  Executive Director of Sub-Acute & Community Care, Paul Greenhalgh says, ”When mental health problems occur, a whole family is affected and the children of people with mental illnesses can experience added disadvantages and disconnection from the community”.

The funds raised by KernART will help clinicians identify those in need and help purchase a range of items or activities to help promote their social connectedness. This could be as simple as helping them to join a sporting club or purchase an item that could help them such as school supplies, footy boots or something else that might help their family through a rough patch.

Entries will be on display at the KernART studio at 1060 Loch-Kernot Rd, Kernot from 7pm – 9pm Friday 3rd of November, Saturday 4th November from 10am – 3pm and Sunday 5th November from 10am – 3pm.

The winner will be announced at the Grand Opening at on Friday 3rd November at 8pm.

Food and drinks are provided. Admission is $20 per head (entered artist are free).
