Meet Bass Coast Health Nurse Jane Ori, who is the Unit Manager of the Emergency Department at Wonthaggi Hospital.  Jane leads 48 nurses and administration staff, who come to work every day to provide life-saving care to people in their time of greatest need.  Over the past two years, the Emergency Department at Wonthaggi has increased the number of patients it sees by nearly 10%, which makes it a very busy place to work!

For Jane, the diversity of her work is one of the best things about her role.

“No two days are the same. I enjoy the variety of patients and the day to day challenges, especially in our rural setting”, she says. “No one day is the same.  We could be busy treating all the day to day issues of infections or fractures, and then before you know it, you can have a cardiac arrest and a stroke patient who need to be immediately resuscitated.  This is when the Emergency team really become amazing to watch – everyone knows what needs to be done and everyone gets in with the single mission to safe this person’s life.  It’s just awesome to be a part of this team.”

In addition to looking after the Emergency Department, Jane also has responsibility for the Higher Dependency Unit at Wonthaggi Hospital, where she directly supports staff to provide the best care possible.

“We see people at their most vulnerable, so it’s particularly important while we’re caring for people that we treat them the way we would want to be treated. I always encourage the team to work in such a way that people will reflect on their experience with us as a positive one, despite the circumstances, and feel comfortable to come back to us if they need to”, she says.

Jane has a diverse nursing history, having worked at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, in rural Australia, and at refugee camps in Africa and Papua New Guinea. She has also worked in northern Queensland in a children’s ward and neonatal intensive care unit, spent time as an agency nurse in Brisbane and worked on Palm Island, before making her way to Wonthaggi, where she has worked for the last ten years in the Wonthaggi Hospital Emergency Department.
