Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) – Key Information - 10.3.2020

Information you need to know 

If you suspect you may have the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), please call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398.  Please note this line is receiving high demand.  Please keep Triple Zero (000) for emergencies only.

Bass Coast Health has extensive processes in place to safely screen and manage patients with suspected viral infections, including novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

We have established assessment clinics at Wonthaggi Hospital (235 Graham St, Wonthaggi) and the Phillip Island Health Hub (50-54 Church St. Cowes).

If you are presenting to the Wonthaggi Hospital (5671 3333) or Phillip Island Health Hub (5951 2101) and suspect you may have been exposed to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and / or have recently returned from overseas travel and have symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat or have trouble breathing, please call ahead and you will be seen at our on site assessment clinics.  You are asked to wear a mask if you have one or fit one at the main entrance and press the call bell, where a nurse will attend to you.

What is coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new virus that can cause an infection in people, including a severe respiratory illness.

The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

What are the Symptoms of Coronavirus?

Many people who contract COVID–19 will suffer only mild symptoms. However early indications are that the elderly and people with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk of experiencing severe symptoms. 

The most common symptoms reported include:

  • Fever
  • Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue or tiredness.
