Elective surgery has re-commenced at West Gippsland Hospital following a two week closure of operating theatres due to issues with air conditioning.

Chief Executive Officer, Dan weeks, said rectification works to repair a faulty airspeed sensor and clean ducts and filters had been successful.

“Air testing of the theatres has returned with favourable results and I am delighted to advise we have resumed elective surgery.”

“Sixty patients are booked in for surgeries this week with twelve patients booked today (Monday August 12).”

Mr Weeks said during the recent theatre closure, consultants were contacted and urgent (category 1) surgeries were re-scheduled or referred thanks to support from Gippsland Southern Health Service (Leongatha) and Bass Coast Health (Wonthaggi). Latrobe Regional Hospital and Monash Casey assisted with the management of our planned Obstetric elective caesareans.

During the theatre closures, an emergency procedure room was established at WGHG for obstetric emergency surgery and life/limb saving surgery.
Mr Weeks said the recent operating theatre closure was a double blow for West Gippsland Hospital and followed a previous closure of the theatres due to the impact of building works to construct a new third operating theatre.

“Again I use this opportunity to thank all those involved in overseeing the rectification work and managing the patients, bookings and cancellations. It has been a difficult few months, and I acknowledge and appreciate the support and tolerance by our patients, community, staff, visiting surgeons and anaesthetists who have all been impacted by the closures,” Mr Weeks said.

“The new third theatre construction is on schedule for completion in September. We also look forward to the opening, in the next few weeks, of the new Short Stay Unit built to support the Emergency Department and new driveway and new patient drop off area at the front of the hospital.”
